Food assistance: Food Assistance Program (SNAP)
Alabama's name for SNAP, run by Alabama Department of Human Resources, Food Assistance Division. If you are enrolled at least half-time, you need a student exemption to qualify, such as working 20 hours a week, work-study or caring for a young child. If you are enrolled less than half-time, the student rule does not apply and only the regular SNAP rules do. See every exemption →
Health coverage: Alabama Medicaid
Alabama has not adopted the Affordable Care Act's Medicaid expansion, so coverage for adults without children is limited. A HealthCare.gov plan may be the better route; check the state's rules below. All your health coverage options →
Child care help: Subsidized Child Care (Child Care Subsidy Program)
Going to college or training counts as an approved activity in this state. Parents can qualify while enrolled in school or training, with no extra work requirement. The education must average at least 15 hours a week; students in class 15+ hours a week or enrolled full time (by the school's definition) meet this. Counted programs include GED/adult high school, certificate programs (12-18 credit hours), two-year and four-year degrees, plus vocational and job training. A mix of work, training and school can add up to the 15 hours.

Phone and internet: Lifeline
We found no extra state Lifeline discount on Alabama's official pages, so the federal discount applies. Who qualifies →
Taxes
Alabama has no state Earned Income Tax Credit. All Alabama taxpayers can file their state return free through My Alabama Taxes, the Department of Revenue's own system (state return only; Forms 40, 40EZ and 40NR). Some approved software providers also offer free federal + state filing for qualifying taxpayers.
