Food assistance: CalFresh
California's name for SNAP, run by California Department of Social Services (state-supervised, county-operated). If you are enrolled at least half-time, you need a student exemption to qualify, such as working 20 hours a week, work-study or caring for a young child. If you are enrolled less than half-time, the student rule does not apply and only the regular SNAP rules do. See every exemption →
California adds state-approved 'Local Programs that Increase Employability' (LPIEs), which exempt students from the SNAP student rule. Since June 1, 2026 every associate and bachelor's degree program at a California Community College, CSU or UC campus counts as an LPIE (not private colleges). Campus employment (any hours), research and teaching assistantships, WIOA programs, College Corps and the Learning-Aligned Employment Program also count statewide. A TANF-funded Cal Grant A or B (unmarried, 25 or younger, family income $50,000 or less) also exempts a student; Cal Grant C does not. Students enrolled less than half-time are not subject to the student rule, and a student's own statement of an exemption is normally enough proof.
Health coverage: Medi-Cal
California has expanded Medicaid, so adults with low incomes, students included, can qualify based on income. All your health coverage options →
